Petrov: Podium proves car?s quality
Vitaly Petrov believes his third place in the Australian Grand Prix is an indication of what the 2011 Renault is capable of, though he admitted he was not sure quite how good the car was before the race. The Russian qualified an impressive sixth, grabbed fourth at the start, and then secured third by making his tyres last through a two-stop strategy while main rivals Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso pitted three times. Report: Volvo hiring 1,200 in Europe, adding capacity

China's Geely has big plans for its Volvo brand, with a goal of reaching 800,000 global sales per year by 2020 or sooner. To accomplish that feat, the automaker will need to bolster its factories and hire more workers, and Automotive News reports the Swedish automaker plans to do just that.
Volvo has announced that it plans to add 1,200 workers in Europe to help satiate an expected jump in demand. A staggering 900 of those jobs will be of the engineering variety, bolstering the staff of the automaker's research and development center in Sweden. Another 200 will fill spots at the automaker's Ghent, Belgium factory, while the remaining 100 jobs will fill various other positions. Volvo is also looking to build vehicles in China to continue sales growth.
Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby says of the move, "We are investing in our future. It means that we have to work hard to continue to be cost competitive ... our cars are selling very well globally." Jacoby points out that the automaker is already experiencing "significantly" stronger sales than in 2010, with the XC60 crossover leading the charge.

Report: Kia Optima Hybrid delayed due to Hyundai Sonata Hybrid pushback

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was supposed to go on sale in December, but at the eleventh hour, the company decided on a last-minute engineering change to enhance safety. When the automaker learned that President Obama planned to sign a bill that would ban a switch that can disable a noisemaker designed to warn blind pedestrians, the Korean automaker decided it was best to remove the switch. The move delayed mass availability of the Sonata Hybrid from December to late April.
But what about its twin, the Kia Optima Hybrid? Ward's Automotive reports that the mid-size hybrid has been delayed until late in the second quarter, or about five months after its scheduled January launch.
Will the substantial delay of the Optima and Sonata Hybrids hurt sales and satisfaction? We're sure there are probably some impatient buyers out there who don't understand why they have to wait, but in the long run, we're likely looking at a mere bump in the road.

Pirelli considers tweaking markings
Pirelli is considering a tweak to its tyre marking system after difficulties distinguishing the colours over the Australian Grand Prix weekend. Ahead of the race, Pirelli announced that its tyres would have different coloured lettering this year to distinguish their compound - with the soft (yellow) and hard (silver) being used in Melbourne. But with teams finding it difficult at times to work out which colour tyres were in use when the cars were in action, Pirelli has promised to re-examine its plan.

Ferrari F50 gathering set for 2011 Concorso Italiano

In 2009, Concorso Italiano held a 25th anniversary reunion for the legendary 288 GTO, regarded as the first Ferrari supercar. The gathering was a resounding success, with fifteen examples showing up to break the record for the most 288 GTOs in one location at the same time. Concorso followed that up the next year with a stunning gathering of Ferrari F40s to celebrate the car's 20th birthday.
So what's next? The F50, of course. Concorso has announced that the third-generation Ferrari supercar will be honored at this year's event, and are currently putting out the call for owners to bring their prized possessions to Monterey in August. Just 349 were produced from 1995 to 1997, so anything more than a few in one place would be impressive.

Renault boss Eric Boullier has admitted to a sense of relief at seeing his team start the season with a podium finish - following the gamble it took on forward exhausts and the loss of Robert Kubica. Force India not quite on points pace
Force India admitted that at present it is not quite quick enough to score points after Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta finished 11th and 12th in Melbourne. Horner: Red Bull did not have KERS
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner revealed after Sebastian Vettel's season-opening victory in Melbourne that the team did not have KERS on its RB7s from Saturday onwards. There was speculation after Vettel took pole position that the team was planning to use an innovative 'start-only' KERS, but Horner told the BBC that the team had been concerned with reliability on its conventional system and merely opted not to run it. Barrichello admits to ?silly? mistake in Q2
Rubens Barrichello admitted that the spin that cost him a shot at qualifying in top ten for the Australian Grand Prix was down to driver error. The Brazilian spun into the gravel at Turn 3 during Q2, after running wide on to the grass on the entry to the corner on the beginning of a fast lap.

Wheldon to race for Herta at Indy
Former IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon has announced that he will race for Bryan Herta Autosport in this year's Indianapolis 500. Wheldon parted company with Panther Racing at the end of last season and does not currently have a full-time drive. He and Herta were team-mates at what was then Andretti Green Racing from 2003 to 2005, with Wheldon winning the Indy 500 and series title in the last of those seasons.

Gavin creates his own marathon
Oliver Gavin will run a marathon of his own in Long Beach as he cannot take part in this year's London Marathon due to the clashing American Le Mans Series race on the Californian street track. The Corvette racer was the best-placed of the group of British Racing Drivers' Club drivers who contested last year's London Marathon in aid of CLIC Sargent children's cancer charity.

ITV increases BTCC live coverage
The British Touring Car Championship will receive approximately 139 hours of live television coverage on ITV this year. The network, which has broadcast the series since 2002, will screen at least seven hours of live coverage from each event in high definition for the first time on ITV4 HD and simultaneously on ITV4 and on the ITV Sport website. Additionally, hour-long highlights programmes from each round will be broadcast on ITV4 and ITV1 in the week following each event, taking the championship's total TV time to 153 hours during the year
