Ford Ranger Wildtrak making global debut in Geneva

Ford is bringing its grown-up Ranger to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Making its world debut is the Ranger Wildtrak, Ford's top-of-the-range pickup packed with premium tech features. The full list of toys has not yet been released but Ford has announced that the Wildtrak boasts voice recognition and a rear-view camera in addition to satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

More important than its interior gadgets, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak is designed to be a tough vehicle when the road disappears. It's capable of wading through water up to 31.5-inches deep and has just over nine inches of ground clearance. Under the hood, the Ranger can be fitted with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder Duratorq engine with 277 pound-feet of torque, or a larger 3.2-liter five-cylinder that churns out 347 lb-ft.

Beyond its interior gewgaws, the Wildtrak is differentiated by different exterior color splits and graphics, along with features like a a standard roof rack and 'sports hoop' (read: faux roll bar) and 18-inch wheels.

As you likely already know, the new Ford Ranger will not be offered for sale here in the United States. If you must have one, book a ticket to London because it goes on sale in Britain this November.

2012 Daytona 500 Will Run Feb. 26

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Next year's 54th annual Daytona 500 will be run on Feb. 26, a week later than usual, Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III announced here Sunday.

The move shortens the NASCAR Sprint Cup season by one week, but also eliminates the March off weekend, one of the rare off weekends in Sprint Cup racing during the February-to-November season.

It also adds a bit of a cushion in case the Super Bowl is pushed back another weekend.

Chitwood said eliminating the March off weekend will have a positive effect because "many fans and media partners have said (it) created a drop in momentum in the early part of the racing season."

Busch dreams of Daytona sweep

Kurt Busch hopes to become the first driver in history to claim a full sweep of victories at Daytona today, following his wins last week in the Budweiser Shootout and the Gatorade Duel qualifying race. While the winner of the Shootout has also won his duel race 11 times in the 52 years of the Daytona 500, none of them have gone on to take victory the main event as well in the past. Local MP says Melbourne should drop GP

A member of Australia's parliament has called for the country's F1 grand prix to be dropped once the current contract comes to an end. Michael Danby, whose Melbourne Ports electorate includes the Albert Park circuit where the race is held, said locals are tired of the event, and that the rising costs are not justified anymore. "The grand prix may have been a good deal in 1996, when it cost the government only $1.7 million; but, with falling crowd numbers and taxpayers footing a $50 million-a-year bill, the government should cut its losses and walk away," he told parliament according to Reuters.

Late Wreck Stops Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Storybook Daytona 500 Ending

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s shoulders may well have borne 500 miles worth of expectations this week at Daytona.

Marking 10 years since the death of his legendary father in NASCAR's most important race, Earnhardt Jr. served as the central beacon of a sport remembering the passing of one of its most legendary drivers.

The sport's most popular driver also has been the most talked about non-factor for most of the last three seasons and has seen his share of changes in the Hendrick Motorsports program around him. A new crew chief -- Steve Letarte -- was in his ear.

Sunday, none of it seemed to be a distraction as Earnhardt sliced his way through the field time and again to find the front -- and occasionally lead -- one of the most unusual Daytona 500s in recent memory.

However, the chaotic nature of NASCAR's season-opening beast, a race marked by the most cautions and lead changes in the event's 53-year history, finally caught up with Earnhardt moments from the end.

2012 BMW 650i Convertible configurator comes online

BMW 650i configurator

The new-for-2012 BMW 650i Convertible is still bigger and heavier than most of the competition, but there are still a whole slew of notable new features about the updated car. Designers filed off some of the more audacious curves in favor of a bit more subtlety. Power from the 650i's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 now sits at 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque - up 40 hp and a whopping 90 lb-ft from the last-gen 6 Series - and the six-speed gearbox has been replaced with a slick eight-speed unit. All good stuff, and judging by the fact that BMW has launched the online 650i Convertible configurator, it appears this big droptop is ready for prime time.

The price tag begins at $92,375 once $875 is added for destination and the dreaded $1,000 gas guzzler tax is applied. The price only goes up from there, with packages like Driver Assistance ($3,900) and premium sound ($1,800) bringing things over the $100,000 mark. Check off all the options and you're looking at a MSRP of $110,375, or enough money for a loaded 550i and a nicely optioned Mazda Miata. Click here to head over to the 650i configurator to price out some high-zoot open-air motoring for yourself.

Morgan Threewheeler gets official [w/video]

Morgan Three Wheeler
Morgan Threewheeler - Click above for high-res image gallery

Morgan wants us all to know that we can take our four wheels and go play somewhere else. The automaker has officially yanked the sheets back on its ridiculously awesome Threewheeler for the first time. This machine is powered by a fuel-injected, 115-horsepower V-Twin engine mated to a Mazda five-speed gearbox, allowing Morgan to serve up hop-in-and-drive convenience while still maintaining the aesthetic of the company's old three-wheel design. The tubular chassis remains exposed in some places and the company says that there's just enough room for a driver, a co-pilot and bit of gear.

We're in love.

Power is shuffled to the rear wheel via a V-belt, and Morgan says that the sole aim of the Threewheeler is to make driving fun once again. We've got to think that improving the company's average CO2 emissions doesn't hurt the vehicle's case, either.

British buyers will be able to lay down a mere £25,000 (about $40,000 USD, based on current exchange rates) before taxes for the privilege of ownership, and bespoke options like a leather interior, custom paint and unique graphics are all available, as well. Hit the jump for the full press release as well as a video teaser of the vehicle.

Trevor Bayne Becomes Youngest Winner in Daytona 500 History

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For all the talk of a new track surface, a different style of racing and promises of the "wildest" Daytona 500 ever, Sunday's much-anticipated NASCAR season-opener still ended up like so many of those that have preceded it -- decided in the final laps.

Making his first-ever Daytona 500 start, 20-year-old rookie Trevor Bayne held off Carl Edwards, David Gilliland and Bobby Labonte to earn the venerable Wood Brothers Racing team its fifth Daytona 500 victory and first since NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee David Pearson's win in 1976.

"Am I dreaming? Is this real? I don't even know where to go,'' a stunned Bayne exclaimed to his team on the radio as he crossed the finish line and drove his No. 21 Motorcraft Ford to victory circle, where he was too young to even drink the traditional celebratory champagne.

The race lived up to its billing, easily setting records for caution flags (16) and lead changes (74 among 22 drivers), but in the end it was a a great show of poise heading to the checkered flag that made Bayne the youngest winner of NASCAR's most prestigious trophy - one day after he celebrated his 20th birthday.

A five-car accident at the front of the field with four laps remaining in the 200-lap regulation period set up the first of two green-white-checkered overtime periods and all but eliminated several of the strongest cars, including Ryan Newman, Regan Smith and Clint Bowyer, who exchanged the lead in the closing 15 laps.

Robby Gordon's spin on the first restart sent cars scrambling, and fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 Chevrolet was collected in the melee, setting up the final two-lap shootout among Bayne and the veterans.

New Kickboxer Concept is all-wheel-drive diesel insanity on two wheels

Kickboxer diesel all-wheel drive
Kickboxer Diesel all-wheel drive concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's been a while since we heard anything from Ian McElroy. As you may recall, he's the twisted mind who came up with the notion of lodging a Subaru boxer four-cylinder between the rails of a motorcycle frame. Well, it appears that he's been a busy bee since showing off his first take on the Kickboxer Concept. McElroy has set about reimagining his creation with a diesel boxer lump at the heart of the action. The engine is still sourced from Fuji Heavy Industries, though it's both smaller and more efficient than the old gasoline lump.

The newest addition to the Kickboxer family boasts new body work and a different swing arm design along with a new turbo configuration. Not quite mad enough for you? How about sticking an all-wheel drive version of the oil-burning moto in your pipe? McElroy worked up a twin-chain design that works with some help from a jack shaft, idler sprocket and a drive axle.

These aren't just some random renderings, though. McElroy says that he has all of the CAD files he needs to have the bikes machined and built. All he needs is the coin to do so. Shall we start passing the hat?

Daytona 500 Winner Trevor Bayne Living a Dream at 20

Trevor Bayne

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Flashing his dimples, and looking even younger than his 20 years, Trevor Bayne grinned broadly, laughed and fidgeted as he conducted his first news conference as the youngest Daytona 500 winner in history.

One day after celebrating his 20th birthday Bayne drove the legendary No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford to victory Sunday in NASCAR's biggest race -- sharing the honor with the team's previous Daytona 500 winning drivers, A.J. Foyt, Cale Yarborough, Tiny Lund and David Pearson. Bayne wasn't even born when Pearson claimed the Wood Brothers' last Daytona 500 trophy in 1976.

Explaining how grateful he was for the opportunity, thankful for his good fortune and appreciative of his team's efforts, the good-looking, well-spoken Bayne sounded as mature and poised behind the microphone as he was behind the steering wheel in holding off three series champions and a handful of other veterans on the last two laps of Sunday's race.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native's biggest smile, however, seemed to come when he found out that his Twitter account expanded from 6,000 followers to 16,000 by the end of the race. And, he modestly conceded, he was going to need a friend to drive his Ford truck home. Seems that while most of Bayne's competitors flew in private jets to the race, he drove his Ford F150 pickup truck from Tennessee to Florida.

Is your city one of the top ten worst speed traps in America?

Speeding ticket getting handed out

The weather is finally beginning to turn warm in parts of our great nation, and with spring looming, plenty of people have an eye on scratching their road trip itch. Before you take to any wide-open expanse of tarmac, it might be worth taking some time to note some of the worst speed traps in the country. Yahoo Autos has gone through the trouble of ranking the top 10 cities with the worst speed traps in the U.S., and while no one should be surprised to see that Los Angeles, California has claimed the number 10 spot, there are a few surprises on the list.

Colorado Springs, Colorado managed to break into the top five with a number four ranking. The locality boasts a heady 186 speed traps, and local law enforcement says that they're happy to write citations for drivers who exceed the limit by 1-4 mph. But it was Texas that took the cake by driving away with three of the 10 spots, including the top two. Austin took the silver metal with 189 traps, while Houston was crowned the speed trap capital of our nation with a staggering 373 hotspots. Head over to Yahoo Autos to check out the full list.

Webber cautious about RB7?s pace

Mark Webber insists that Red Bull remains cautious about the competitiveness of its RB7, despite the car showing signs of an advantage over its rivals. The new Red Bull topped the first two days at Barcelona this week in the hands of Sebastian Vettel, though more impressive was its ability to lap consistently quickly over a stint, while most teams struggled to hold on to tyre performance. But Webber is adamant that Red Bull still has issues to focus on and believes Ferrari is looking strong.

Young Driver retains Turner, Mucke

Young Driver Aston Martin has completed its 2011 GT1 World Championship line-up by retaining Darren Turner and Stefan Mucke alongside the already-announced Tomas Enge, and recruiting newcomer Alex Muller. Turner, Mucke and Enge are all long-time factory Aston drivers, and were part of Young Driver's squad in the inaugural World GT1 series last year. This season will see Turner and Enge's partnership split up, with Turner joining Mucke in the #8 car, formerly shared with Christoffer Nygaard, while Muller joins Enge in the #7 Aston after appearing with Mad-Croc Corvette and Hegersport Maserati last year.

Alonso: Drivers can?t cut out risk

Fernando Alonso thinks it is impossible for Formula 1 drivers to cut out risk away from the race track - as he expressed relief that friend Robert Kubica was recovering well from his recent rally crash. The Spaniard was the first driver to visit Kubica in hospital following the accident the Pole had on the Ronde di Andora rally earlier this month. And, after admitting that he feared the worst in the immediate aftermath of the crash, Alonso says that drivers always face dangers away from the track

Shields Earns Second Victory of 2011

Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca hosted this week?s race for members of the Red Sox Racing League?s Formula One series. The 11 corner, 2.23 mile layout is one of the most demanding courses on the schedule. Hairpin corners, high-speed corners, blind uphill corners and the famous ?Corkscrew? all conspire to make even the most seasoned road course sim racers cringe. Eighteen RSR drivers accepted the challenge and lined up for the online racing event. Les Turner entered the race with two wins in the first three races in Season One of the 2011 schedule. Robinson Shields was the only other RSR driver to have defeated Turner in 2011. As things turned out, the early season battle between the top two drivers kicked into a higher gear as they battled for [...]

Teams to test modified soft tyres

Formula 1 teams will get a chance to try out modified versions of the super soft and soft tyres in Barcelona testing this week - with Pirelli confident that drivers are now getting used to the characteristics of its rubber. Although the high degradation of Pirelli's tyres caused a few surprises in early testing, Pirelli's motorsport chief Paul Hembery thinks that teams have made a lot of progress in understanding how to get the best out of their performance.

Ten Years After: Dale Earnhardt's Co-Biographer Shares His Memories

I stopped in a line of traffic, the nose of my car just short of the rail tracks that run in front of Richard Childress's shop complex in Welcome, N.C. The line of cars began to build behind me.

I heard a loud train horn.

I didn't exactly jump, but I looked quickly left and right, up and down the tracks, just to be sure. Then I looked behind me, and yes, there was Earnhardt, behind the wheel of a black Chevrolet dually pick-up. He and a colleague in the cab were doubled over laughing.

Earnhardt and I finally parked simultaneously, and he waited for me on the sidewalk in front of the shop. "You must have jumped half a foot," he said, still chuckling.

"Did not."

He grinned like a cat. "I rigged that horn on the truck for times like that. Some people, we really get 'em."

NASCAR Issues Technical Changes for Safety's Sake

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- As NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams were packing up their equipment from Sunday's Daytona 500 pole qualifying session, NASCAR officials issued a technical bulletin aimed at keeping the cars from the 206-mph, two-car drafts that dominated Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout 75-lap non-points race.

"I thought it was cool at the beginning, medium in the middle and when they hit 206, I wasn't thinking of the race anymore, I was thinking what we needed to do in the next couple days,'' NASCAR Vice President for Competition Robin Pemberton said of Saturday's race,

In response to the increasing speeds and two-car breakaways, NASCAR has regulated the front grill opening on all the cars to 2 1/2-inches by 20-inches and it will install a pressure relief valve in the water cooling system. Pemberton said the idea is to decrease the temperature that the engine water will boil. Some cars could run water as hot as 290-300 degrees. Pemberton would like to get that temperature down to 250 degrees.

Cars shouldn't be able to run in the two-car pack for a sustained period of time for fear of overheating, thus making it less likely they will reach speeds upwards of 200 mph like they did Saturday night.

Although NASCAR did not change the size of the carburetor restrictor plate, Pemberton said that remains an option and didn't rule out other technical changes in advance of the Feb. 20 season-opening Daytona 500. Officials are looking to see what the racing is like in the Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying races on Thursday. They issued the technical bulletin Sunday so teams will have a chance to make the necessary changes before NASCAR Speedweeks resumes with a practice session on Wednesday morning.

"The speeds are high because everyone did their job,'' Pemberton told reporters in a nearly abandoned Daytona garage late Sunday afternoon. "The track with the paving, Goodyear, the teams have done a great job and now we're (NASCAR) in the fold and trying to reel some of that back in. And we have the support of the race teams.

"There's a lot of pressure here,'' he continued. "I can't even begin to tell you the pressure from a large group of people that are expecting us to get it right (for the Daytona 500).''
