Comparo: Honda Civic Hybrid takes on Chevrolet Cruze Eco and Volkswagen Jetta TDI
Filed under: Budget, Hybrid, Sedan, Chevrolet, GM, Honda, Volkswagen, Comparisons
Battle Of The Eco Compact CarsIf you wanted a highly efficient compact car five years ago, you bought a hybrid. Diesel was still a dirty word commonly reserved for heavy-duty pickups and the occasional Euro import, and 30 miles per gallon was just becoming the new industry benchmark. The Chevrolet Volt was still just a concept, all-electrics like the Nissan Leaf were barely a blip on our radar, and if a car was turbocharged, it was for go-fast reasons, not fuel-sipping ones.
Fast forward to 2011. Times have changed.
Now, 40 mpg is the new 30 mpg, and we're quickly approaching the days when 50 mpg won't be such a lofty number. After all, there are quite a few cars that already crest that mark without breaking a sweat (including one or two of the cars in this test...).
Enter the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco and 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI - a trio of cars that all boast fuel economy figures of 42 mpg or higher on the highway, and all have price points within the $18,000 to $24,000 range. All three fuel-sippers take a completely different path towards overall efficiency - traditional hybrid, turbocharged gasoline and clean diesel.

We're here to put these three eco compacts through their paces - testing not only economy, but general drivability, quality, comfort and value. The winner won't be based simply on its miserly ways - all three cars are pretty darn close in that regard. Instead, we're looking to see which car represents the best overall package, regardless of powertrain. We're here to find out which eco-warrior is the one we'd open our wallets for.

Official: Mugen shows Honda CR-Z RR Concept at Goodwood
Filed under: Aftermarket, Hybrid, Performance, Hatchback, Honda

Mugen is not a name that one would be shocked to hear announced over the Goodwood Festival of Speed PA system. The Honda CR-Z, however, is a car that festival goers would be surprised to see idling ahead of its run up the hill. Upon closer inspection, though, you would see a bunch of aero bits, hear a racy exhaust thump and see the Mugen badge on the rear end. The Mugen CR-Z that we showed off earlier was not the only tuned hybrid two-seater at Goodwood. In fact, it wasn't the only CR-Z that Mugen brought along. Like a lonely Skywalker... there is another.
The Honda CR-Z Mugen RR Concept also showed its aggressive face at the Festival of Speed. The RR Concept goes a step further into the race-ready arena than the Mugen CR-Z. The exterior aero bits are more focused for track use, but there is no word on the performance figures created by what's under the hood. Mugen says this vehicle is being used as a study to help define future performance models. Take a look at it from both angles in our gallery below.

Report: 2016 Next-next Porsche Boxster to get twin-turbo four, Cayman sticking with six
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Porsche, Rumormill

With the next-generation Porsche Cayman caught running 'round the 'Ring, the reports/rumors about its platform and powertrains have begun to surface.
According to Car, both the Boxster and Cayman will ride on a wheelbase that's 60mm longer than its predecessor (up to 2,415 mm), with the overall length growing slightly and curb weight dropping by around 30 pounds. So nothing revelatory then...
However, Car contends that the next major Boxster/Cayman facelift is due around 2015/2016 and a host of new drivetrains will follow suit. A bigger bore twin-turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four will replace the current 3.4-liter flat-six, developing over 350 horsepower and a similar amount of torque. A smaller, 1.6-liter version will make its way into the oft-rumored 356-inspired speedster, the nearly forgotten mid-engine Volkswagen and Audi's sub-TT. And don't be surprised if a hybrid-assist option appears in late 2016.
But for the time being, the current flat-six will soldier on, although we've heard that the four-pot could debut inside the Boxster at first, with the Cayman getting the new turbocharged mill the following year.

Exclusive: BMW to offer six-cylinder 6 Series Coupe in America after all
Filed under: Coupe, BMW, Luxury

Although we've already sunned ourself behind the wheel of the 2012 BMW 650i Convertible, we've been eagerly awaiting its 6 Series Coupe companion. BMW had led us to believe that only the twin-turbo V8 650i would make its way to North American consumers, but apparently, that ain't necessarily so. While we will indeed receive the 650i Coupe shown above on October 1 (slightly ahead of the rest of the world, we might add, which gets it mid-month), Autoblog has learned that buyers will also get the chance to own the less costly 640i model.
The 640i incorporates BMW's N55 twin-scroll single turbo six-cylinder and includes features not found on the V8 model, including a fuel-saving start-stop function. In European spec, the TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter delivers 316 brake horsepower and 332 pound feet of torque through a standard ZF-source eight-speed automatic. (For comparison's sake, the 650i musters 400 hp and 450 lb-ft). In addition to the 640i, European Editor Matt Davis reports that a grips-at-all-corners xDrive variant will come on-line this fall, but only if you splurge for the V8 model.
The 650i Coupe will make its North American debut during the Pebble Beach festivities in Monterey, California this August, but the 640i won't be shown. Instead, your dealer will be able to place an order for you in September, with the very first customer cars expected to trickle in at the end of October.

Video: Bellflower trailer mixes homebuilt Mad Max motoring with flame throwers, angst

Bellflower is the story of two friends named Woodrow and Aiden. They enjoy preparing for a perceived forthcoming global apocalypse by building muscle cars and flamethrowers. As one would be want to do in such a situation. The dynamic shifts when Woodrow meets a girl and falls in love. Woodrow and Aiden begin to move into different circles, and so opens a rabbit hole of love, anger, betrayal and violence.
Why are we droning on about an upcoming indie flick? We're not movie critics, but we do love cars, and Bellflower features one of the meanest machines to grace the silver screen in some time. The car is known as Medusa, and it started life as a standard 1972 Buick Skylark. A supercharged Chevrolet 455 sits in the engine bay, and a pair of semi-truck grade exhaust stacks climb out of the trunk. With the flip of a switch, those stacks can spew 30-foot high flames or engulf the surrounding area in smoke.
Medusa is essentially America's own Mad Max machine.
The film hits theaters on August 5, and initial reviews have been very strong. The trailer is waiting for you after the jump, as is a clip of Medusa entertaining the crowd at the recent SXSW festival in Austin.

Video: 2012 Buick Regal GS hits track with 270 hp, 15 more than planned
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Videos, Buick, GM

The 2012 Buick Regal GS is set to hit dealerships this fall, but that means engineers still have time to fine-tune the vehicle before it arrives in showrooms across the country. What better way to do that than to take the Regal GS to the automaker's Milford Proving Grounds? This Michigan road course is a twisting, turning stretch of asphalt that allows engineers to really put a vehicle through its paces.
The hi-po Regal GS is powered by a direct-injected 2.0-liter turbocharged Ecotec four-banger, which pumps out 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. That's enough horses to coax the sedan from 0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds, according to General Motors estimates. A few more notes about those power figures: First, when the Regal GS was first announced, we were only promised 255 horses, so 270 is a very welcome figure.
Second, the Regal GS and its 2.0L turbo boasts more torque than the larger 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which produces 260 pound-feet in the Chrysler 200, and the 2.0-liter Turbo in the Hyundai Sonata, which is rated at 269 pound-feet of twist (to be fair, the latter two have never claimed to be sport sedans). What else does it beat? The list includes the Acura TSX V6, Audi A4, Lexus IS250 and the Volvo S60 T5. Plus, 95 percent of that peak torque is available from 2,300 to 4,900 rpm.
It's also worth mentioning that, with 135 horsepower per liter, the new boosted Ecotec boasts the highest specific power output of any engine in GM's history. It's also the most power-dense rating the SAE has ever officially recognized. That's impressive stuff.
Now we bet you're ready to watch a Buick test driver push the 2012 Regal GS around the track. Stop reading and click past the jump for the clip. Also, be sure to take a look at the full press release for more information on this new, sporty Regal.

Autoblog Beta: Now open to all

Autoblog Beta, the preview site showing off our next top-to-bottom redesign, is now open to anyone with eyeballs at http://beta.autoblog.com. We had initially restricted access to just our community of Facebook followers, and we owe them a HUGE debt of gratitude.
We hated having to put a bouncer at the door, but those first few thousand people in the building gave us more quality feedback than we knew what to do with. Because of them pounding on the site to find its cracks, our developers were able to quickly fix problems and add new features that we hadn't even thought of in the design phase.
But today we're ready to show off Autoblog Beta to everyone. We hope you'll pound on the site too, and use the new Beta Bar at the bottom of the site to send us feedback about what you like and don't like, as well as alert us to anything that's just not working. You can also use the Beta Bar to quickly switch back and forth between the current version of the site and Autoblog Beta. If the Beta Bar is taking up too much of your screen real estate, there's a button on the bar's right side to minimize it.
Beta Bar:

Remember, Autoblog Beta is just that, a beta site, which means there are areas still not finished, some features not available and other things just not working. That's why we're letting you check it out early, so we can iron out all the problems before the beta site becomes the real site.
Click here to visit Autoblog Beta.
